Woolworths started in the old Royal Hotel in Cape Town in 1931. The founder, Max Sonnenberg, a determined man set about capturing the public’s imagination with a store policy that set Woolworths apart, and in 1934 they were already opening a second branch in Durban.
This was followed by branches in Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg. Today it is a highly respected retail chain that offers a selected range of clothing, homeware, food and financial services, all under its own brand name
Since its inception 74 years ago, the Woolworths brand has become synonymous with innovation, quality and value for money and their fabulous goods are sold at 149 corporate stores and heaps of franchise stores throughout the rest of Africa and the Middle East.
